Building Permit Exemption

New Farm Shed

Council may exempt farm storage sheds from a building permit or other building regulatory requirements on a case by case basis. This will not remove the need to obtain other permits or approvals such as planning permits prior to constructing the shed.

To be eligible for the exemption the proposed shed must be located on land that is used for farming and the shed must be used only for the storage of farm equipment. Examples include buildings that can be classified as a Class 10a such as haysheds and machinery sheds.

Buildings that are used for processing such as dairies, produce or packing sheds cannot be classed as 10a and cannot be provided with the exemption.

Further information on farm shed classification is available in the Victorian Building Authorities Practice Note 2014-67.
