Burning off during the fire danger period

Fire Danger Period

What is the fire danger period?
The Fire Danger Period is when CFA restricts the use of fire in the community. This is to help prevent fires from starting. The Fire Danger Period is NOT the same thing as a Total Fire Ban.

When is the fire danger period?
The CFA sets the fire danger period for each Council at different times in the lead up to the fire season. This often depends on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions. It can be declared as early as October and in remains in place until the fire danger lessons, which may be as late as May. Please see the the CFA website and check the South Gippsland municipality for the current fire restrictions.

Can I burn off during the fire danger period?
No Council permits to burn will be issued during the fire danger period.

Can I have a fire for cooking or heating?
Yes, provided it is for:

  • A barbecue, pizza oven or other properly constructed appliance while it is being used for cooking food;
  • A fire in a manufactured fireplace while it is being used for heating.
