Types and Maintenance Requirements

Treatment System Type Maintenance Requirements Disposal Field
Septic Tank Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals.

Disposal field and any associated stormwater diversion drains to be protected from damage and maintained in good operational condition at all times.

Lawn or other vegetation to be established and maintained on disposal field at all times.

Sub-surface disposal field lines to be checked and flushed from isolation valve by service agent whenever treatment system is serviced.

Wormfarm (no sand filter) Six month and 18 month service then at two yearly intervals. Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals.
Sand Filter (after septic tank or wormfarm) Annual service check of sand filter as well as maintenance of septic tank or wormfarm as above. Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals.
Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS)

Annual contract for quarterly servicing (one service every three months).

Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals best assessed by servicing provider.

Membrane Wastewater Treatment System (Orenco AX20, Taylex MBS) Annual contract for half year servicing (one service every six months).
Greywater Treatment Systems Annual service contract with an accredited and trained service technician. Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals.

Re-use treated greywater for toilet flushing, washing machine water and garden irrigation. Dispose of greywater by surface or sub-surface irrigation which is recommended to be flushed and checked regularly by a qualified person. 

Eco-Max Cells Annual check of system by experienced service agent. Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals. Replacement of amended soil every 15 years unless system performance demonstrated as satisfactory. Grass mound disposal design.
Biolytix BF6 (Vermiculture system) Check and/or pump out tank at three year intervals with two yearly servicing by an experienced service agent. Sub-surface disposal area.
Reed Bed Check and/or replace dead reeds as needed. Evaporation pond with overflow drains.
Dry or Wet composting units Remove broken down solids with safety equipment from the unit and dig into appropriate area. Wet composting unit waste line to dispose into the sub-surface trenching.
