Cat Curfew

cat curfew Published Thursday, 14th February 2019

Lately Council has received a lot of comments regarding the 24 hour Cat Curfew. Council wishes to clarify a few points.

  • The introduction of the 24 hour Cat Curfew does not change what is already the law. Animals, no matter what type, are to be contained within an owner’s property boundary at all times.
  • The introduction of the 24 hour Cat Curfew will not require owners to purchase and install 'cat runs' on their properties. Council only ask that owners take precautions to ensure their animals are contained within your yard or property.
  • To enable the introduction of the Cat Curfew (and Dog Leash Order) Council will need to amend the current General Local Law 2014 to allow the introduction of the Cat Curfew to commence. This may not be until mid-2019.

Until this time, we ask that all our cat owners undertake measures to ensure their animals are safe and contained within their property. An excellent source of information on how to contain your cat within your property is found at the Agriculture Victoria website.
