Foster is a dairying and grazing town 170 km south-east of Melbourne on the South Gippsland Highway. It is a short drive north of the renowned Gippsland coastline and Wilsons Promontory.
Foster, originally named Stockyard Creek, was once a stopover for drovers travelling through from Port Albert. By accident in the 1860's, loggers discovered a rich strain of gold. A gold rush followed which finally ended in the 1930's.
