Work Experience at Council

South Gippsland Shire Council endeavours to actively support local secondary schools, by hosting work experience opportunities.  This is a great introduction to local government and can assist in developing and enhancing your skills within the workforce.

We offer Work Experience in a variety of fields, including:

Administration – general administration opportunities available in various departments throughout Council, including People & Culture (HR)

Customer Service and Media & Communications - Face-to-face and over-the-phone interactions with community members.  Interactions with the local press, online through its management of the Council website and Facebook page and working with other departments on brochures, posters, reports and other printed material.

Community Strengthening – Assisting the community with volunteering, community planning, recreational activity, arts and cultural activities, youth engagement and improving accessibility for people of all abilities.  You will provide data entry and administrative support as well as work out of the office such as assisting with setting up and managing community events and public forums.

Environmental Health – Provides a range of services focussed on food and health, as well as promoting public health education.  You will have the opportunity to go out in the field to inspect food businesses, help investigate various complaints and visit new housing developments.

Engineering - Asset Management supports our major assets including roads, buildings and parks & gardens. You would see the systems & processes related to asset management and assist in minor tasks.  Our Capital Works delivers projects across all infrastructure areas including roads/bridges/footpaths, buildings, landfill and recreation/sporting projects. You would get the opportunity to see these works and assist in minor tasks with the delivery of these projects.

Information Technology – You will assist in Level 1 & 2 Service Desk, Level 3 requests, GIS minor tasks, Mail processing and scanning plus exposure to network infrastructure.

This is a mix of practical geography, building and design, computer based mapping and negotiation skills.  You may assist with project work on land planning, visiting development sites, using computer mapping systems so may be office based or out in the field or both.

Eligibility and Expectations

Work experience is the short-term placement of students with employers, to provide insights into the industry and the work place. Our work experience program is offered to secondary students undertaking years 9 to 12 preparing to enter the workforce. Students participating in the program are given the opportunity to spend one week within available business units to observe and participate in the daily activities. Due to legislation, all work experience students must be aged 15 years or older to be able to complete work experience at South Gippsland Shire Council.

Students studying at a registered training and education organisation are eligible to apply for work experience provided that it forms part of their education program and their educational institution or agency covers them for personal insurance and public liability. Victoria has Child Safe Standards designed to keep children and young people safe in organisations.
