Selectors began pushing south from Moe and Morwell into the Strzlecki Ranges.

1885

Settlers were able to start planting crops and grew hops, arrowroot and later onions.

1890 A post office was established in a settlers home and named Dumbalk after the aboriginal word meaning bleak or chilly. Dairy farming became the most profitable farming activity with butter made on farms.
1893 A Dairy Cooperative was formed and a butter factory built.
1900 A hall was built along with a General Store.
1903 New butter factory built.
1922 Herd testing was introduced into the dairy industry.
1957 An artificial breeding centre was established.
