Heritage

South Gippsland is known for its small towns and settlements with their own unique history, stories and character. From mines to railway stations; from commerical hubs to bush nursing hospitals; from community schools to active dairy factories; South Gippsland has a wealth of heritage to share with residents and tourists alike.

Council has produced a publication celebrating the heritage of South Gippsland. It provides a single location for all the Shire's key heritage information that is user-friendly for the whole community.

This upcoming publication, The Heritage Places of South Gippsland, includes many of the key heritage sites and features identified in the 2004 South Gippsland Heritage Study (see below). Work done in 2020 by a heritage expert updated many of the 2004 citations to accurately reflect the state of heritage in the Shire. Part of the 2020 review included the photographic recording of many of the heritage sites in South Gippsland, which has been included in the publication.

As part of the Heritage Places of South Gippsland, the owners of a number of key heritage properties that Council has included in this publication have been sent a letter acknowledging the heritage importance of the property. The inclusion of a property or features within this publication does not change the level of control or protection of the property by Council, and does not require any action by the owners.

If owners wish to show off any heritage features of their properties, additional photographs can be organised with Council's Heritage Officer on 5662 9200.
