Abbey Nicholls - Korumburra

Abbey is a rolling environmental leader in Korumburra. A keen roller-derby participant, Abbey is described by many as a young superstar with a passion for advocating for the climate and environment, social justice issues, and helping other students make their own changes whether they be big or small.

Abbey has been considered an environmental leader in the Korumburra Secondary College since she started high school.

In 2020, Abbey ran a ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ event that was inevitably forced online due to the pandemic. To host the event, she completed some development training and is still heavily involved in the School Strike 4 Climate network.

She has a passion for leadership as a member of the Student Leadership Team. As part of this team, she has spoken at assembly’s and assisted with organising casual dress days. One of these casual dress days was organised to raise awareness about gender-based violence.

To extend her leadership capabilities, Abbey participated in the Gippsland Student Leadership Network during 2022. As part of this, she created a website to tackle issues of discrimination in Gippsland. The website provides resources on inclusivity for LGBTQIA+, culturally, religiously, physically and mentally diverse people.

For a student just 16 years of age, Abbey is well-versed in some extremely complex issues which shows her natural ability to educate those around her.
