Kira Waldron - Meeniyan

A bubbly and supportive Mary McKillop year 10 student, 16-year-old Kira has lived in Meeniyan her entire life.

With parents who are community minded, you can imagine Kira has followed in their footsteps. She has assisted with making and hanging Christmas decorations in the town and organising children’s activities during the Meeniyan Garlic Festival.

Kira is involved with a number of community organisations including:

  • Meeniyan Stony Creek Fire Brigade where she is part of the Junior CFA program.
  • Korumburra Gun Club — Kira is a keen and accurate shooter who enjoys volunteering at the Club and competing at multiple local and state events, including the Gippsland Sports Academy.
  • Korumburra Scouts as a Venturer.

Earlier this year, Kira represented Mary McKillop at the Model United Nations Assembly Competition. She instantly put her hand up when she heard she could advocate on behalf of Haiti, one of the most impoverished countries in the world. She put her hesitancy aside and spoke in front of this state-wide competition. Kira also put her leadership skills on full display leading the entire assembly of 40 students from 15 schools across Victoria to adopt a new resolution of tackling the prevalence of rising sea levels and destruction of small island nations around the world.

For the last four years, Kira has volunteered with the Meeniyan Stony Creek Fire Brigade. She has helped recruit new members and is looking forward to transferring to a senior CFA member when she qualifies. This work has sparked a passion for working in emergency services and an ambition to become a paramedic or police officer once she completes school.

For this eloquent and confident young lady, the world is her oyster.
