Councillor Mohya Davies

A Gippy girl born and bred, Mohya is passionate about our region.

Mohya previously served on Council from 2008 until 2016 and decided to run for re-election in 2021 to help return trust and respect to South Gippsland Shire Council after a period of adminstration. "The South Gippsland community deserves to have a Council they are proud of, that builds relationships based on cooperation and teamwork between Councillors, Council staff and the community, to be a strong united Council that will leave a legacy of sound decision-making." Mohya also served as Mayor in 2021.

Mohya and her husband John live on a farm that overlooks the iconic Wilsons Promontory. While running the farm, they raised six children including two daughters they adopted from Ethiopia. They are now proud grandparents to nine grandchildren, eight of whom still call Gippsland home. They have operated a number of small businesses over the last 40 years including the farm, an accommodation business and a retail butcher shop.

Originally a kindergarten teacher, Mohya worked in early childhood education for many years, including 12 years as the Director of the Fish Creek Kindergarten.

Her passion for children has extended well beyond her days as an early childhood educator. Mohya has been on a number of school committees, sporting committees as well as serving on the South Gippsland Hospital board for 30 years. Mohya is currently chair of the Prom Coast Centres for Children, which operates kindergartens in Foster, Fish Creek, Toora and Welshpool.
