Coal Creek Community Assembly

Thank you for your interest in joining the Coal Creek Community Assembly.
Please note that registering your interest does not guarantee a place on the Assembly.

More than 5,000 invitations were sent to households across South Gippsland. The final group of around 25 participants will be randomly selected from eligible registrations to represent the Shire's population. Recruitment and selection of participants is being undertaken by an independent organisation, a specialist community engagement consultancy called i.e. community.

If you are not interested in participating, or are unavailable to attend all of the Assembly’s meetings, you don't need to do anything. There is no need to complete this registration form.

Registration closes at midnight on Sunday 18 February.
Please note: South Gippsland Shire Councillors (past and present) and current Council employees and their immediate families are not eligible to register.

If you have received an invite and would like to participate in the Assembly, please register HERE or at the register link.

Have a question or need support to complete the registration?
Please call the Coal Creek Community Assembly team at i.e. community on (03) 9134 6511 and leave a message. We will get back to you within one business day.

About the Community Assembly

What is a Community Assembly?
The Coal Creek Community Assembly will meet on three occasions, an initial briefing and two Saturday sessions.
All in-person meetings will be held at Coal Creek and participants are required to attend the briefing and the two Saturday sessions.
We are considering moving the date of the last session to Saturday, 20 April (in place of Saturday, 30 March, 2024).

How will the Community Assembly work?
Participants will be given the opportunity to understand the challenges and opportunities facing Coal Creek and discuss the value it offers to South Gippsland. The Community Assembly will:

  • hear what the broader community has to say
  • be informed by local stakeholders and experts
  • consider a range of options
  • put forward their views directly to Council.

Expert facilitators will support Assembly members with different viewpoints to work together in a respectful manner and come to a shared position on their aspirations for Coal Creek.

Will the public be able to provide input into the Community Assembly?
Participants will be asked to review and consider the outcomes of the broader community consultation which runs from 22 January to 29 February 2024. You can provide input to the broader consultation by sharing your views on Coal Creek on the Your Say South Gippsland website.

What happens to the Community Assembly’s recommendations?
Council is committed to taking the Assembly’s recommendations seriously and Councillors are looking forward to receiving the Assembly’s recommendations to form the foundation of our decision-making process. All of the Assembly’s recommendations will be considered and included to the greatest extent possible. Where a recommendation is not able to be implemented, an explanation will be provided to the Assembly and the broader community.

Who can register their interest in being part of the Assembly?
Anyone who has received an invitation in the mail is able to register to participate in the Assembly. We are seeking people of all ages and backgrounds to ensure the Assembly represents the population of South Gippsland. If you received an invitation and are not able to attend all three sessions, you may pass it on to a member of your household (aged 16 years or over) to register. Please note proof of address will be required. South Gippsland Shire Councillors (past and present) and current Council employees and their immediate families are not eligible to register.
