Unsealed Roads - Re-Sheet Program

Gravel re-sheeting

South Gippsland Shire Council’s Road Re-sheeting Program renews approximately 80 kilometres of Council’s unsealed roads each year.

For road maintenance, the Shire is divided into North and South areas, each containing eight zones. One zone in each area is selected for the annual program, generally following a multi-year rotation. Individual roads are assessed to determine when re-sheeting is needed.

The program begins in July, with road selection informed by our teams’ assessments of road condition, traffic levels and maintenance needs. Roads carrying higher volumes of traffic may require more frequent grading and re-sheeting. Road inspections are undertaken in accordance with Council’s Road Management Plan.

Before re-sheeting, the team undertakes drainage work and trims overhanging vegetation where required. This preparation helps water drain away from the road and provides clearance for trucks to unload gravel.

The Re-sheeting Program helps maintain the condition of Council’s unsealed roads and supports safer travel for the community.
