Dates of Significance - May 2026

For the month of May, Council is holding a number of events and illuminating its main building in an array of colours to acknowledge the following dates.

IDAHOBIT Day - Flag Raising Ceremony
17 May: Due to this date falling on the weekend, Council will be raising the rainbow flag on Wednesday 13 May.
Outside Council's Main Office at 9 Smith Street, Leongatha. 

On International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (otherwise known as IDAHOBIT Day) Council will raise the Rainbow Flag to recognise this day and show support to the LGBTQIA+ community.

National Volunteers Week
18 to 24 May

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. The 2026 theme is “Your Year to Volunteer”, focusing on encouraging community participation and highlighting the vital role of volunteers in building sustainable communities. Council's Main Office will be lit up red during this week except, Wednesday 20 May (orange) and Friday 22 May (yellow).

Wear Orange Day (a.k.a WOW Day)
20 May

Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) is a national day of appreciation held annually to thank State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers. People across Australia are encouraged to wear orange to honour the volunteers. Council's Main Office will be lit up orange on this day.

National Road Safety Week
17 to 24 May

National Road Safety Week aims to help raise awareness about the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it. Council's Main Office will be lit up yellow on Friday 22 May.

Reconciliation Week
27 May to 3 June

Join us for a flag-raising ceremony and hear guest speaker Clinton Morton, proud Wiradjuri man and South Gippsland resident.

Where: Council Offices, (out the front of the Customer Service Counter), 9 Smith Street, Leongatha. 
When: Wednesday 27 May, 10.30am to 11.00am.
