Now is a great time to develop a Weed Management Plan.

Weed control needs a plan, not just one spray.

It's tempting to treat weed control as a once-a-year job: spray in spring, tick the box, move on.

But weeds like blackberry and flax-leaved broom don't work that way.  

• Blackberry can produce large impenetrable thickets, smothering other plants and, while currently dormant, multiplying come spring and summer.
• A single flax-leaved broom bush can release thousands of hard-coated seeds that lie dormant in the soil for years. So spraying the visible plants deals with this year's growth, but the seed bank underneath is still there waiting to grow again.

These are just two examples of why now is a great time to develop a Weed Management Plan to tackle these and other weeds that may be on your property.

A plan may include:

• Digging out small, isolated patches of weeds by hand where practical
• Slashing large infestations of blackberry canes to increase access and reduce the amount of herbicide needed when active growth resumes (if you choose to use herbicide).
• Earmarking the times of year when spraying will get you the most bang for buck

Seeing successful control of these kinds of weeds takes a cycle of treatment, monitoring, and follow-up over several seasons – not just one spray.

A coordinated plan can protect everyone's investment of time and money, and works even better when neighbouring properties are on the same page.
