Koonwarra Landfill
The Koonwarra Landfill is a crucial waste disposal facility in South Gippsland owned and operated by Council.
Access is through the Koonwarra Transfer Station and is generally for commercial or larger-volume disposal. For example, large loads of general waste, building and demolition waste, kerbside garbage collections and approved asbestos.
What Goes to Landfill?
Only waste that cannot be reused or recycled is permanently buried in the landfill.
Landfill waste is:
- Deposited in specially constructed cells.
- Compacted to reduce volume.
- Covered daily to minimise odour, litter and pests.
Landfill Lifespan
Depending on waste volumes, the Koonwarra Landfill is expected to last until 2034/35. Due to EPA regulations, it is unlikely that approval will be granted to expand the existing landfill or build a new landfill within South Gippsland. Because of this, conserving airspace at the Koonwarra Landfill is a key priority (by reducing, reusing and recycling).
