Kerbside Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) Collection

The Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection helps ensure as many valuable resources as possible are recovered.

Instead of your food waste going to landfill, it is recycled with your garden organics to create compost that is used on farms and in parks and gardens across Victoria. The result - improved soil quality and reduced landfill-related costs and emissions.

How do I use my FOGO bin?

Each property is provided with a kitchen caddy and liners as part of Council's kerbside FOGO collection service.

  • Use your caddy to collect the scraps inside. Keep it somewhere easy to access (bench, near current bins, under the sink etc.) with the lid closed.
  • Pop the scraps in loose, or use a certified compostable (AS4736) caddy liner. Make sure you don't tie a knot in the bag as it will take longer to break down.
  • Empty the contents into your FOGO bin. Taking your caddy to the bin helps reduce mess.
  • Add any garden waste from your property throughout the week and put your bin out each week on collection day.

What items can go in my bin?

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps.
  • Meat, seafood bones and shells.
  • Bread, cereal, rice, noodles and pasta.
  • Out-of-date, inedible foods.
  • Leaves, plants, twigs, grass and weeds.
  • Coffee grounds and loose leaf tea.
  • Cheese, yoghurt and cream.
  • Cooking oil soaked up with paper towel.
  • Pet food.
  • Hay and straw.
  • Hair (human/animal) and feathers.

What items can't go in my bin?

  • Anything in the 'Accepted' list for Mixed Recycling.
  • Anything in the 'Accepted' list for General Waste.
  • Plastic bags (including bioplastic, degradable and biodegradable).
  • Food packaging (incluidng stickers, rubber bands and cling wrap).
  • Cat litter, dog poo and other animal faeces.
  • Treated or painted timber.
  • Branches over 10 centimetres in diametre or too long to allow the lid to close.
  • Bricks, rubble, sand, dirt or other building waste.
  • Plastic pots and containers.
  • Nappies or wet wipes.
  • Takeaway coffee cups (including compostable), coffee pods and tea bags.
