Safe Local Roads and Street

Project 6: Princes Street, Korumburra

Why this project?

Princes Street is close to several education facilities for younger children in Korumburra, being St Joseph’s Primary, Korumburra Primary and the Karmai Community Children’s Centre. Parents and children use Princes Street to walk to these facilities and also as a pickup and drop off location. Princes Street is also often used by vehicles seeking to “short-cut” between Jumbunna Road and the South Gippsland Highway, with the current straight, wide road encouraging higher vehicle speeds.

Council has previously investigated potential upgrades in Princes Street as part of the school precinct, through TAC’s Local Government Grant Program, receiving recommendations for potential treatments in 2024 which were released to the community for consultation and feedback at the end of 2024. Since then, Council has considered community feedback and further developed the project, and now has the opportunity to deliver these needed treatments under this program.

What is involved?

Raised pedestrian priority crossings will be provided at key locations on Princes Street, outside Jumptown Lane and Stag Street, supported by road cushions between them and also at the roundabout intersection with Bridge Street and Shellcot Road. The raised crossings and road cushions will encourage better pedestrian visibility and lower vehicle speeds in these locations, and the system as a whole will discourage unnecessary traffic from using Princes Street as a speedy connection.

What about the school crossing?

The school crossings on Princes Street and Bridge Street will be supported with road cushions as part of this project, but will not be changed into full-time zebra crossings. This means that the supervisors will stay, helping children to cross during school start and finish times.

What are the benefits?

Lower average vehicle speeds on Princes Street will reduce the likelihood and severity of any potential crashes, which is especially important in an area with such a high likelihood of encountering young children. Making the route less convenient for drivers who may not even be stopping at Korumburra will encourage them to stay on the highways, reducing the potential for conflict between user groups on this road.
