Safe Local Roads and Street

FAQs

What is the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program?

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission, have developed the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program to support the development and delivery of road safety infrastructure projects on local roads.

Through the Safe Local Roads and Streets program, the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission will work alongside all 79 Victorian local governments to plan, design and deliver safety improvements on the highest risk local roads, intersections and precincts.

Why are these projects happening?

Improving safety on our local roads is vital in working towards the Victorian Government’s vision of no lives lost or serious injuries on our roads by 2050.

Local government authorities own 87 per cent of Victoria’s road network and, currently, 40 per cent of serious injury claims through the Transport Accident Commission occur as a result of crashes on these roads.

Recognising the barriers local governments face in delivering road safety improvements, the Safe Local Roads and Streets program is supporting councils to build capacity and capability to deliver safer local roads into the future.

By integrating local governments’ transport priorities with a safe system approach, the program aims to support local governments to plan, develop and deliver strategic road safety infrastructure improvements.

What is a Safe System Approach?

A Safe System approach requires roads to be designed and managed so that death and serious injury are avoidable. It acknowledges that our road environment plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes and helps to reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable. As humans, we can’t always avoid making mistakes. What we can do is build more forgiving road infrastructure so that when a mistake does happen on the road, it doesn’t cost a life.

How much is being spent on these projects?

The total cost of these projects is estimated to be $2 million, fully funded by the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which is providing $210M to improve the safety of local roads across Victoria.

How have the projects been chosen?

Council has identified these priority projects through feedback received from the community over time, targeting challenging sites where vulnerable road users are often at risk.

Why doesn’t this program include improvements to intersections, crossings or speed treatments on the highway in my town?

Council is always seeking to improve facilities for users, on this occasion the funding under the Program was available for local roads only.
