Safe Local Roads and Street

Project 2: Foster Main Street

Why this project?

Main Street in Foster was recently upgraded through Council’s Foster Streetscape Project. Now that the new arrangement has been established, there are opportunities to make further improvements in the way Foster’s traffic operates. Crossing Main Street and Bridge Street especially can be difficult for pedestrians, to find the safest gap during busy periods. This project will support more walkability in the centre of town.

What is involved?

Main Street will be getting upgraded priority pedestrian crossings throughout the shopping centre, supported by road cushions/raised platforms to manage vehicle speeds. Raised crossings will be provided at the intersection of Main Street and Station Street, between the Exchange Hotel and IGA, as well as at the existing crossing near Pearl Park. The zebra crossing currently in Main Street will be supported with road cushions.

What are the benefits?

The treatments will make Foster safer by encouraging drivers to take safer speeds. It will also improve walkability in town by making better, safer connections for pedestrians in the shopping precinct and near the park. Better walkability in town will make the available parking in Foster more effective, reducing the need to find parking on the right side of the road for users who find crossing the roads difficult under the current arrangement.
